An apartment in Rue Droite, Nice Old Town - On the 4th floor, no elevator but felt really nice!

Wonderful detail way up high!  In Nice you must look up or you miss some great detail like this building on Passy especially when the sun shines on it.

If all else fails, a new home for me!
If Laurel & Hardy could join why not me?

Foreign Legion HQ at Nice

Legion etrangere siege a Nice

Was I daft to pass up this one?  Not the most distinguished of buildings, true. Not that nicely kept either. The apartment was lovely inside.

Here it comes ........ However, the corner post of the balustrade is not connected to the base.  There is a nice crack along the top of the tiles too. Looks like a big ticket item to me - am I being too picky??

Look at them today!  No they are not dead bodies swept ashore from yesterday's storm.
Yesterday was so different let me tell you!  Rain and wind!  And yes, I did go for my run along the Proemenade des imbeciles (renamed for me and a very few others who ventured out).

Typical bourgeoise facade (left) - Note the differing decoration on each floor, no two floors are the same on any of these buildings

Typical Nicoise facade (right) -  These vary a great deal. This one has particularly pleasing tiling and a lovely stone facing.
Facade typique nicoise (a droite) - Celles-ci varient beaucoup.

Nice is very cosmopolitan with a large arabic population.  In the Rue d'Italie there are many shops catering exclusively for this community.  The shops are very popular with all the communities since the products are fresh, good value and different.

The things you miss when running - 1

On returning from my run on Friday morning I found the police had cordoned off the road adjacent to mine.  Had a peer, saw nothing of interest so carried on.  However, a drama was unfolding. Oui!  Saw it in Nice Matin today.

A guy of 64 was being evicted from the apartment in which he had lived for 30 years. He was threatening to jump!  This was all taking place in full view of my window (see slide show of Nice from an earlier post 9 Oct).  I saw nothing as I was pre-occupied showering and thinking deeply about where I was going to go for coffee.

In the event he didn't jump. Got evicted.  Sad.

And the apartment?

Good location

Excellent balcony

Nice sunny position with view

Looks like 2 or 3 rooms

Vacant possession - obviously

Wonder what the realtor's number is?

Perfect.

A Rometti apartment - Rometti built many apartment blocks in Nice in the then very modern style of the 70s. They are characterised by having marble common areas as well as featuring marble flooring in the apartments themselves. Spacious, airy and well designed they were built to a very high standard.

Today I looked at an apartment - Absolutely perfect.  You just know there is a 'but' in the air and there is! It is an enormous one too. BUT It is just over the entrance to a tunnel to Nice Nord.   Being a few floors up I thought it may be ok.  Nope. The noise is continual with the attendant pollution, an interesting prospect when it gets hot here, sadly put it in the not for me camp. Anyhow the pictures will (may) show you why I liked it .....

Olive Pate - Yum! Ambling through the Cours Saleya in Nice there was a stall selling some wonderful looking stuff derived from olives. Being a fan of tapenades it took me two seconds to reel in two small jars of these olive pates - one natural and one with pimento. Boy are they good. So good I thought I would snap their pictures before devouring their contents. Is 2 euro for 30g expensive? Dunno but I will be back for more.

Toddling from Nice to Villefranche-sur-mer -  Had a lovely walk across Mont Boron to Villefranche. Up hill all the way as you would expect.  Past some very high rent places behind walls up to the top where there is a fort from Napoleonic times.  In the park area they have outside gym equipment for those who obviously don't want to pay for gym membership!  Villefranche redefined the word quiet.  There must be people there as the restaurants were open.  The chapel painted by Cocteau was cute.  Sadly the light was on the wane, even so it was tough to get excited about the photographs .....

On Rue Raimbaldi ...

You and me too buddy!

This is either someone full of zeal looking for an apartment or, more likely, a realtor listening attentively to his client's requirements.

It is so so irritating when some idiot posts photos that you haven't asked to see!  Some people huh! Certains eh!)

An interesting article from Friday's Nice Matin.

Bet you didn't know that Cannes on the Riviera had housing estates (in US projects).   Bet you also didn't know that the police suffer the same lack of respect as they do in the UK and US.  The fun bit is that the police took umbrage at the lack of respect allegedly setting about the locals in what has been described as a brawl!  The police response is basically that they aren't taking the abuse.  Refreshing, some may say disturbing?? Not me.

The exciting world of Mechanical Engineering came back to haunt me like Marley's ghost (there is a joke in there when it comes to plastics which I will ignore).  At a Meetup for expats and those new in town I met a lot of people, fifty percent being French with the balance being various nationalities including quite a few Irish.  Great evening chatting to everyone.  This being France all conversation ended up in English. I digress.

One young lady admitted to being in PR & marketing which is not that unusual or unexpected except for the fact she had been involved in CAD application with her latest project being in BIMs (Building Information Modelling) - a subject I know very well so can bore anyone rigid at the drop of a hat.  If you are in no way connected with Mechanical Engineering you will not know a company called Victaulic with whom I had dealings endeavouring to get their information to support 5D BIMa while back. Are you asleep yet?  Well, she is doing the PR/marketing for Victaulic in France & Germany.  There is nothing more to this story except it is a heck of a coincidence, boring, but a coincidence all the same!

A different concept in mastering a language?  Fun and social, yes.  Helpful?  It is Franglish. Essentially it is a one to one with paired French & English speakers in 14 minute discussions changing languages after 7 minutes.  At the session I attended there were 5 tables of which I did 4, took just over an hour.

Apparently Franglish is working well in Paris and about to hit London. I am not sure that in its current state it is more than fun although it 'feels' as though it could really provide a fresh approach to comprehending a language as it is spoken.
